We came up with. If our kids are working and going to school (getting good grades), that we would pay for half of their first car. We will not pay for the whole thing. I think when people have their own money on the line kids/teens included they are more opt to take care of it.
However if they are not working and doing poorly in school we wont pay 1 red cent for a car for them. Why get them a car when they have not or are not doing anything to earn the privilege of owning a car or driving? There is a young man at the local high school who I often see driving his Hummer...?
I would not buy my son a hummer, no.
Im not sure what car i'd buy. I would probably match whatever amount he saves up.
My parents have never bought me a car, but I think I would match my son, not buy one for him. There is a young man at the local high school who I often see driving his Hummer...?i am not planning on buying my teenanger a car. and if i were to, it sure the heck wouldn't be an expensive car like a hummer.
For our kids we plan to get them something "cute, affordable, safe and gently used."
btw.. noooooooooo never! on the hummer. yikes! There is a young man at the local high school who I often see driving his Hummer...?Well, when I have kids and they get to driving age I plan on buying a new car...
See when I have kids I plan on getting a mini van and then when they are 10 I plan on getting a car and then by the time they are 15/16 the car is only 5/6 years old and then I plan on buying myself another more "me" car and then handing down the car to the kid once they get their license...but they have to pay insurance, gas and repairs etc..There is a young man at the local high school who I often see driving his Hummer...?
Our son is only 8, but we've already bought him his first truck. My husband was at an auction a few months ago and they had a 90's Ford that was in good condition and my husband got it for $400. Not the best looking truck, but I imagine by the time our son is old enough to drive it he and his dad will have turned that thing into a totally new truck.
We're willing to spend a few thousand on cars for our kids...but they won't be driving any Hummers...not by a longshot. Something that runs well, looks nice, and is safe. A 16 year old doesn't need a Hummer...I don't even need a Hummer! lol :)
My stepson is getting his license next month. The agreement we made with him is that it must be a durable, used car, and he pays half.
We intend to use the same rule with all of the kids.
Buying a kid a Hummer is, to me, over the top. Way over the top. There is a young man at the local high school who I often see driving his Hummer...?
If I was super rich I might. It's not like he'd get run over in that thing, and I'm not exactly the Prius type.
I had a Beretta when I was 16 and got a brand new Sebring convertible when I graduated high school. There are benefits to being an only child born to older parents.
But when I look back at it and think about all the trouble I could have gotten into and how legally responsible my parents would be, I think my daughter will not get a car until 18. I'm OK with her having a permit and only driving with me or her father when she's 16, but no license til 18. At that time, I think I'll be OK with giving her my car. I'll probably have something 4 or 5 years old still in good shape. I don't want her in an unreliable vehicle, but newly licensed drivers back into stuff. No point getting a brand new shiny car.
I'm even willing to pay at least in part for her insurance on her own policy, as it is going to be more expensive then if she were to be on ours. But as someone who worked in insurance and saw too many bad stories, I'm OK with paying more on the front end to avoid it on the back end.
I'm thinking a used Camry (few years old) is a better option. For us anyway. Or maybe a 1976 boat of steel like I had?
My children will both go with their Dad, pick out a fixer upper, and learn how to do the repairs. It won't necessarily be the hottest car on the street, and may not even be pretty, but it will run and it will be within our budget.
My neighbor insists that her kids will drive the best cars at school. Of course, the truck they bought their twenty-one year old son was recently repossessed. The car and motorcycle they bought for the nineteen year old are both in threat of repossession. I don't have the heart to tell the thirteen year old that he won't be driving anything that has to be financed at the rate they are going.
Hot Wheels or Matchbox.
I'm not going to buy my child a car. I pay for half, and she will earn the other half. So whatever car she plans on getting, I will put up half the cash. When you give your children everything, they learn the value of nothing.
Ask my aunt with the 40-year-old unemployed son living in her apartment. They paid $300,000 for him to study in California to be a chiropractor, took out loans for him to start his own practice (which he walked away from after less than a year), paid all his bills, living expenses, credit cards, car payments, everything. Now he can't even get hired, he's been fired so often. And his car was repossessed. My aunt had to declare bankruptcy, and they are garnishing her pension.
My daughter is going to learn the joy of paying for it yourself with your own money.
I'll get my kids some sort of beater/starter car. I got my license in 1995, and was given a 1986 Caprice Classic sedan- if you aren't familiar with the car, it's a tank. I have a pretty big family, and generally, when someone is looking for a used car for a new driver, there's a pretty good chance that someone has something in a garage.
He might have been driving his parent's Hummer trying to look cool lol. No, my son will not be getting a fancy car...he won't get a junker either though. I'd say we'll probably get him a little truck maybe a Ford Ranger or an S10.
Aside from the fact that I couldn't afford it? I wouldn't. My brother used to work for roadside assistance on those things. He would get calls all the time from people running out of gas and wanting free gas or a tow. They couldn't afford to feed the beast. I'll be going half with my kids. With that said it would have to be safe, reliable and affordable. My dad is a mechanic so I would likely have him find them a great deal on a gently used and safe vehicle.
I would never buy my daughter a Hummer especially as her first car. We actually have a 2008 Hummer Ice blue. It is very hard to drive for me because I am only 5'5. I try to avoid driving it. Our daughter is getting a job when she is 16 OR she is going to keep very good grades and do extracurricular actvities with her school. If she does college courses in her last year of highschool then she will not be expected to have a job. Her school really comes first though. If she maintains good grades and does extracurricular stuff then we will help buy her a car. It will be nothing fancy. It will be sufficient for her to drive though. Best of luck!
I made my 17 and 20 y/o buy their own car
